Mediating Effects of a Sense of Community in the Relations of Depression/anxiety and Social Participation among the Elderly Living Alone

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effects of a sense of community on the relationship between Depression/anxiety and Social Participation among the elderly living alone. Using the survey data of the analysis were 157 in total. The study had the findings as below. First, sense of community showed different outcome by the group according to gender, age, academic background, perceived health conditions and hospitalization record. Second, social participation was high among women, religious persons, those with lower depression/anxiety and those with higher sense of community. Third, depression/anxiety had a negative relation with sense of community and social participation, while sense of community had a positive relation with social participation. In other words, there was a direct effect: the lower they had depression/anxiety, the higher they had social participation. While, when sense of community was put as a mediating variable, the scale of the effect decreased relatively, showing partial mediating effect of a sense of community.
